Power Towers

I love electrical towers, or how I like to call them: power towers. They remind me of whimsy. They look to me like giant multi-armed robots. And despite their mass, they appear so light. When I stare at them I imagine that any moment they might start marching slowly and in unison. Don't be surprised should I post more images of them.

And then there is other people's talent and how lovely it can be when it doesn't fill you with jealousy. Tanya Davis wrote these lovely songs/poems/art and I can't stop listening.

It has been forever since I posted. I know. But it is very likely that I (and maybe my mother) are the only people who read my blog anyways. So, I'm not apologizing to myself. That would be stupid.

So, my sis told me to watch this video and that we should move to Brazil. I was like "WHAT?" But then I watched and now I understand. It's your turn to watch and understand.

At the fair v.2

You may recall that late last year, I participated in the Small Press of Toronto Book Fair (SPoT) along my good friend Denise Kwan. We had so much fun the first time we decided to participate in the spring show as well. This time I came better prepared with a whole heap of new stuff to share with strangers. And this time around, Sisterhood Press participated too.

This is what my half of the table looked like. I had Fancy Waters, Buttons, Greeting Cards, Notebooks, all featuring original one-of-a-kind art.

Film Review: From Paris With Love

My thoughts: Do not watch this film. Not good in any imaginable way.

Pluses: It ends.

Minuses: Every aspect of the film makes me like it less. Yuck! Oh and Jonathan Rhys Meyers is in it - that should have been warning enough.

My thoughts: I loved it! The acting, the story, the visual world Almodóvar creates and presents. I enjoyed the timing in the film. I liked it all.

Pluses: It's in spanish. It's fun.

Minuses: I don't have any complaints.

Review: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Stole this image from google, as I have the book no longer.

So, I wanted to write this detailed and thoughtful review of Jonathan Safran Foer's novel Extremely Loud and Incedibly Close. But much time has passed since I read it and I have forgotten all the interesting things I had to say about it.

The bottom line is: I really enjoyed the book. It was whimsical and sweet and an easy book to get through. I would suggest it to anyone who likes to read.

Warning: you may need a box of tissues if you have any sort of emotions at all.

I love the British. Their humor is a main reason for my deep appreciation of Great Britain.

This clip is from the show Mock The Week. The guests were asked to guess the headline for D. I. R. B. which was accompanied by a photo of Alistair Darling (Chancellor of the Exchequer). One of the loveliest bits is the sweet sad shame on Frankie Boyle's face afterwards. I understand you Frankie, there is no need to be embarrassed. I say this is (crazy) genius.

"My tummy hurts" makes me smile with delight every time. The panel on this episode is Rob Brydon, Jimmy Carr, Alan Davis and Bill Bailey. The host is the great Sir Stephen Fry.

Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter (VRRWS) organized a day of remembrance and action on violence against women for the 20th anniversary Memorial for the Montréal Massacre. The day long public conference was held at the Vancouver Public Library, Vancouver, BC, on Saturday, December 5th, 2009, 10am to 6pm. VRRWS invited the public to participate in a day of action to end violence against women.

This animated video is a collaboration between Talia Eylon and Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter. It was shown during the event. To view the event flyer click here. Pictures from the successful event will be added shortly.

Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter (VRRWS) offers a 24-hour rape crisis line and transition house for women escaping male violence. Annually they answer over 1,400 calls from women in crisis and house over 120 women and their children. They provide women with emotional support, peer counseling, a support and action group for women who have experienced male violence, and advocacy & accompaniment to hospital, police and court. They are a volunteer-run organization. Support Vancouver Rape Relief and Women's Shelter in every way that you can. Learn more about what they do and how you can get involved here.

Denise Kwan (good friend and amazing illustrator) and I shared a table at this year's Small Press of Toronto Book Fair (SPoT). It was a great experience and a good time. I sold my Fancy Waters along with my mothers poetry chapbooks. Currently I have 4 kinds of Fancy Water; Magic Water, Sexy Water, Smart Water and Strong Water. Denise was selling her zine and holiday cards. We met interesting people, saw interesting things and had fun. Here's a bit of what you would have seen if you were there with us.

And the winner is the dog from Pora umierac (Time to Die) 2007. I got to see this sweet Polish film at the Eh!U Meet The Europeans – European Film Festival (for free). FYI -- The festival runs until December 3, 2009.

The script was written especially for Danuta Szaflarska by writer/director Dorota Kędzierzawska. The story follows Aniela, a single elderly woman and her dog, as they pass the hours in her very large house. Szaflarska gives a great performance but the dog is just outstanding.

I say watch this film! If an amazing and adorable dog actor isn't enough to convince you. Think about how awesome it is to see a film starring and centering around an older women. How rare is that? Also, it's filmed beautifully in black and white. Oh and you'll laugh. And did I mention a dog that can prep walnuts.
